Sealants

Dental Sealants: A Simple Shield Against Tooth Decay

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth—primarily the molars and premolars—to prevent cavities. These areas are especially vulnerable to decay due to their deep grooves and pits, which can trap food and bacteria even with regular brushing. Sealants act as a barrier, sealing out plaque and food particles, and making these surfaces easier to keep clean.

The application of sealants is quick, painless, and non-invasive. After thoroughly cleaning and drying the tooth, a special gel is applied to roughen the surface slightly, which helps the sealant bond properly. The gel is then rinsed off, and the tooth is dried again before the sealant is painted on. A curing light is used to harden the sealant, creating a smooth, protective layer over the tooth enamel.

Sealants are most commonly recommended for children and teenagers, as they are more prone to cavities during the years when their permanent molars first come in—usually around ages 6 and 12. However, adults without decay or fillings in their molars can also benefit from sealants. Applying sealants soon after the molars erupt gives them the best chance to protect against decay from the start.

While sealants are highly effective in preventing cavities—reducing the risk by up to 80%—they are not a substitute for regular oral hygiene. Brushing, flossing, healthy eating, and routine dental checkups remain essential. With proper care, sealants can last several years and be reapplied as needed, offering a cost-effective and preventive solution to maintain long-term oral health.
